The Story of M-Rock

From the CEO

               I often ask my marketing department to, “tell the story”, the story of M-Rock. The story is simple, M-Rock reached a time in the company’s history where we stopped making the same ordinary products that everyone else does and decided to make extraordinary products.

               The whole story goes a little like this. When I was twenty years old and in college I found myself with a screen printing company, which is a long story in itself. The company was no more than a name and a few pieces of cheap equipment, of which I did not know how to use. I was off and running with a new business, off being the key word. I have often said I learned everything in business the hard way, and all things considered I think I learned those lessons well.

               Twelve years later and a lot more of the hard way . . . I had started to figure this little screen printing business out. Over the years we had added embroidery, signs and great service. Vision Graphics was a small town success! Now in my early 30’s local opportunities lead me toward the start of M-Rock. All the experiences of vision Graphics had prepared me to look at the start of this new company in a different way. I wanted to develop this company to compete on a national level and I wanted to develop a successful brand name.

               Along comes M-Rock. The name had to be a part of me, not an arrogant thought, only a constant reminder that this company and the products we produce would always represent me. I would skip as much of the “hard way” of learning with the start of M-Rock and so from day one we produced and sold quality products. We also backed these quality products with quality service. These philosophies were the foundations of M-Rock: quality products, backed with quality service.

               Now back to the “tell the story”, story. I always took pride in being from rural West Virginia, and I wanted to prove that a country boy could compete on a national level, produce better more innovative products, and ultimately build a better company from small town USA. . .and we did.

               Over two years ago I decided to change our already successful company into something different, a company driven by extraordinary products, and that is what we have done. Just watch what we will do next.

Q: What is the best structure to install MSI over?

A: MSI is engineered for and is easily installed over a wood structure. It will stack and fasten with ease, so that your installation will move as fast as you can.

Q: Can MSI be installed over existing brick or block?

A: MSI can be installed over brick or block with pre-drilled holes and concrete screws, along with the MSI line, M-Rock offers a Superior Fit line that utilizes the panelized system but it lacks the rails so that you can use mortar for installation.

Q: What tools will I need to install MSI?

A: All the tools you need you more than likely already own. You will need a level, a drill, and either a tile saw or a circular saw with a masonry blade. These basic tools will take you from start to finish with your MSI project.

Q: How do I know how much stone to get?

A: Simple measurements are used to order your MSI stone. You will need a square footage measurement for your “flats” and a linear footage measurement for your inside and outside “corners”. It is recommended to add 10% extra for waste so that you do not run short. Be sure to check out our downloadable Rock It All for help with the measurements.

Q: Can the product be cut?

A: Yes! It cuts with ease and is engineered to be cut with either a tile saw or circular saw with a masonry blade. One thing to remember is that you will have minimal waste if you reuse your cut pieces. Example: When you get to the end of a row and have to make a cut, use your left over piece to start your next row.

Q: What do I do to finish my project out, or when I get to a receptacle or want to trim out the project?

A: M-Rock has a wide selection of beautiful accessories pieces that are specifically designed to add that extra touch of elegance to your stone project. They will not only give you a fit and finished look, but they also help in the installation process. Q: What is a Starter Strip?

A: The starter strip is your first step with MSI. It is will be installed the length of your project area and it needs to be installed level. The starter strip is what your first row of MSI will lock onto.

Q: How much does MSI weigh versus natural stone or traditional stone veneer?

A: MSI along with M-Rock’s traditional stone veneer products are 8 lbs a square foot, which is roughly 1/3 of the weight of natural stone. No footings are required but large sections of stone may need weight considerations.

Q: How durable is MSI?

A: Our MSI and Superior Fit lines are backed with the same 40 year warrant that our traditional line carries and we build all of our products with confidence.

Q: How will the product be shipped?

A: MSI was engineered to be a boxed product, so that it is easily handled and moved. Each box of flats contains 4.9 square feet and each box of corners has 1.66 linear feet.

It has been a very busy few months here at M-Rock. Here at the M-Rock headquarters we are like a bee hive, where everyone is busy, busy, and busy! With the release of our MSI and spring building season taking off we are seeing more and more M-Rock heading out the door. Are you getting ready to start a project of your own? If so, we can help!

Our spring shows kicked off with the Capitol Home and Garden show in Chantilly, VA where we were excited to debut our MSI, Mortarless Stone Innovations. It was an instant hit when people realized, “I can do this!” The following week we held a ribbon cutting ceremony to “Officially” release MSI!

Our next stop was Christiansburg, VA and Salem, VA. Both shows allowed us some extra exposure to the DIY crowd looking to do face lifts, updates and additions to their homes, while helping people who are planning for homes settle on stone. Our new post surround was a big hit at these shows because many people were excited at the idea of covering there existing 6x6 posts without mortar. A quick and easy fix for exposed 6x6 posts!

Charleston, WV hosted us for two different shows! We are always excited to show in our home state and we were pleased with the excitement surrounding all the new products. The weekend of April 1, 2, & 3 was particularly busy for us because we had to split and be in two places for two different shows, one was Charleston, WV and the other Knoxville Home Design and Remodeling show.

We were excited to win 3rd place overall at the Knoxville Home Design and Remodeling Show for best display! We were also featured on WNOX 100.3 on their “Fix it or Flip it” show. The Knoxville show was a huge success for us and we were glad to meet so many new people who are planning their M-Rock project.
